The Jordanian Minister of Agriculture, Ibrahim Al-Shehadeh, announced that the government decided to import Syrian barley, thus achieving financial savings of up to $ 30 million compared to world prices.
Shehadeh, who also holds the environment portfolio, said during a meeting that included a number of associations and livestock breeders, "The aim of the decision is to cover the needs of livestock keepers of this commodity, because of its importance in the feed mix."
He pointed to the quality of Syrian barley being a crop this year.
The decision includes allowing the import of barley after ensuring that it meets the Jordanian standard, especially its protein content.
Individuals and cooperatives will be allowed to import, subject to lower prices than the global stock exchange.
